We are working with a client looking for Interim Remote Tax Manager - Insurance & Financial Services.

The Role

We have partnered with our client, an insurance and financial services organization, in their search for a Tax Manager. This role owns the premium tax and regulatory filing function end to end and partners closely with statutory reporting, accounting, and finance leadership on GAAP and STAT tax provisions.

This is a hands-on, detail-driven seat for someone who knows insurance taxation specifically - premium tax is not the same as sales tax, and Schedule T, guaranty fund assessments, and state page reconciliations are the daily language of this role.

What You'll Own

Premium & Regulatory Tax

  • Prepare, review, and file premium tax, municipal tax, assessment, guaranty fund, surcharge, and related regulatory returns across all licensed jurisdictions
  • Manage the premium tax calendar and workflow - assignments, due dates, estimated payments, extensions, and final filings - ensuring on-time, accurate submission in every state
  • Reconcile premium tax liabilities to the general ledger and to written/collected premium data; investigate and resolve variances
  • Track guaranty fund assessments and related premium tax offsets/credits through recovery
  • Monitor retaliatory tax calculations and state-by-state rate and rule changes

Statutory & GAAP Reporting

  • Prepare quarterly and annual Schedule T and State Pages in support of the statutory annual statement
  • Record tax accruals, journal entries, and account reconciliations on the quarterly close calendar
  • Prepare GAAP (ASC 740) and STAT (SSAP 101) tax provisions, including current and deferred computations, admissibility testing, footnotes, and disclosures
  • Support the statutory filing cycle in coordination with the financial reporting team

Income Tax & Compliance Support

  • Build federal and state income tax return workpapers and supporting data for internal preparation or external provider review
  • Support state apportionment, nexus analysis, and multi-entity/consolidated filing considerations
  • Respond to tax audits, state notices, and regulatory information requests - gathering documentation, drafting responses, and tracking to resolution
  • Maintain process documentation, SOPs, and internal controls over the tax function; identify and implement automation and process improvements

What You Bring

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA or MST preferred
  • 5-10 years of tax experience with meaningful exposure to the insurance or financial services industry - carrier, broker, agency, or public accounting insurance practice
  • Working knowledge of premium tax, municipal tax, surcharges, and guaranty fund assessments across multiple states
  • Experience with statutory reporting concepts - Schedule T, State Pages, SSAP 101 - and with ASC 740 GAAP provisions
  • Strong general ledger, reconciliation, and close-cycle discipline
  • Advanced Excel; experience with tax compliance and statutory reporting software (e.g., Premium Pro, TriTech, Wings, OneSource, Corptax, or similar) strongly preferred
  • Comfort managing a high-volume, deadline-driven filing calendar with a high bar for accuracy
  • Clear written communication - you'll be drafting audit and notice responses that go to regulators
