Position Overview
Our client is seeking a Payroll Tax Manager to serve as the subject matter expert for payroll tax compliance following the transition of payroll operations back in-house. The organization has recently brought payroll back from a third-party vendor and is working through payroll tax issues across multiple states.
This role will be responsible for reviewing and auditing payroll tax activity, identifying and resolving issues, ensuring ongoing compliance, and monitoring future tax legislation and requirements. The ideal candidate is highly analytical, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with senior leadership and cross-functional teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Review and audit multi-state payroll tax activity to ensure accurate and timely filings and payments.
- Identify, research, and resolve outstanding payroll tax issues, including taxes that may have been incorrectly calculated or not remitted.
- Serve as the organization's payroll tax subject matter expert, providing guidance to the payroll team and leadership.
- Monitor federal, state, and local payroll tax legislation and assess the impact of regulatory changes on payroll operations.
- Partner with the two-person payroll processing team to provide tax oversight and ensure accurate payroll runs.
- Reconcile payroll tax liabilities, payments, filings, and reporting to identify discrepancies.
- Work with ADP and other payroll tax providers to resolve issues and ensure accurate tax processing.
- Leverage Workday to review payroll data, tax information, and related reporting.
- Support payroll tax audits, notices, registrations, and correspondence with tax agencies.
- Develop and maintain payroll tax controls, processes, and documentation.
- Collaborate closely with Payroll, HR, Finance, and senior leadership to resolve issues and improve payroll tax processes.
- Proactively identify potential tax risks and recommend process improvements.
Preferred Qualifications
- 5+ years of payroll tax experience.
- Experience bringing payroll operations in-house or transitioning payroll away from a third-party provider.
- Experience remediating historical payroll tax issues.
- Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local payroll tax regulations.
- Experience supporting payroll across multiple entities or states.
