Senior Litigation Attorney


Responsibilities

  • Manage all litigation across the organization, with a strong emphasis on employment litigation.
  • Direct and oversee multiple outside counsel firms, including reviewing briefs, auditing billable hours, and establishing structure and accountability.
  • Draft and review contracts, letters, and internal legal documents.
  • Conduct legal research across employment, fair housing, real estate, and operational issues.
  • Build foundational litigation systems, processes, and workflows within a newly forming legal department.
  • Serve as a senior litigation partner to the General Counsel (who has strong corporate experience but no litigation background).

Skills Required

  • Extensive litigation experience (15+ years), with strong grounding in employment litigation; fair housing or real estate litigation helpful.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage, direct, and challenge outside counsel, including performance oversight and billing review.
  • Strong drafting skills (contracts, letters, memos).
  • Ability to create structure in an unstructured, newly formed legal department.
  • Excellent interpersonal approach - collaborative, steady, not professorial, and able to partner effectively with non litigator GC.
  • Must be California barred.
  • Prior in house experience preferred; law firm background strongly beneficial.

Education & Work Experience

Degree:

  • JD from an accredited law school.

Work Experience:

  • 15+ years practicing law, with a heavy litigation background (employment litigation dominant).
  • Experience drafting and reviewing contracts.
  • Experience managing multiple outside counsel firms and building processes from scratch.
