Overview

We are seeking an experienced Interim Head of Engineering to lead and scale a high-performing engineering function within the Financial Services domain. This is a senior leadership role with full ownership of engineering culture, capability, and delivery. The successful candidate will play a key role in shaping what "good" looks like over the next 6-12 months, while building an environment where engineers can do their best work.

This is a significant opportunity for someone excited by building teams, developing people, and creating a strong, modern engineering culture.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide overall leadership and direction for the engineering function

  • Define and articulate what success looks like for engineering in the first 6 months and beyond

  • Build, lead, and retain outstanding engineers across squads (full-stack and software-focused)

  • Drive a strong engineering culture, including developer guilds, collaboration, and continuous improvement

  • Partner closely with Architecture, Product, and other senior stakeholders

  • Be hands-on where needed, with the ability to sit down with architects and engineers to shape solutions

  • Establish modern software engineering and DevOps practices

  • Create an environment that attracts top engineering talent and enables them to thrive

  • Act as a mentor and leader, inspiring teams around what they can achieve

Required Experience & Skills

  • Proven experience in a senior engineering leadership role (Head of Engineering / Engineering Manager / similar)

  • Strong background in modern software engineering and DevOps environments

  • Experience building and scaling engineering teams and delivery capability

  • Ability to work closely with architecture and influence technical direction

  • Strong people leadership, coaching, and culture-building skills

  • Comfortable operating in a growing or evolving engineering organisation

  • Passion for developing engineers and creating high-performing teams
