Interim Controller (Hybrid)

We're partnering with a growing, privately held consumer products organization to identify an experienced Interim Controller who will play a critical role in stabilizing the accounting function, overseeing financial reporting, and strengthening inventory accounting operations.

This is an excellent opportunity for a hands-on accounting leader who thrives in entrepreneurial environments, combines deep technical accounting expertise with strong leadership capabilities, and is comfortable rolling up their sleeves to execute detailed accounting work.

Location: Hybrid (Stamford, CT - 3 days onsite per week)

Engagement: Contract through Korn Ferry, with potential for extension or permanent conversion
Schedule: Full-time, 40 hours per week

What You'll Do

  • Provide immediate leadership and stability for the accounting function during a period of transition.
  • Lead, coach, and review the work of an accounting team of approximately seven employees.
  • Oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes, ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting.
  • Prepare and review journal entries, account reconciliations, balance-sheet schedules, and supporting documentation.
  • Own inventory accounting, inventory valuation, cost of goods sold (COGS), and related balance-sheet accounts.
  • Analyze inventory discrepancies, adjustments, returns, reserves, and COGS variances across multiple distribution channels.
  • Serve as the primary technical accounting resource for U.S. GAAP, complex transactions, and accounting-policy decisions.
  • Evaluate existing accounting processes, internal controls, and reporting procedures, identifying opportunities for improvement.
  • Support internal and external audits and partner with finance and operational stakeholders to resolve accounting issues.
  • Balance team leadership and oversight with direct involvement in day-to-day accounting activities as needed.

What We're Looking For

  • Active Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation.
  • Significant Controller, Assistant Controller, Director of Accounting, or comparable accounting leadership experience.
  • Extensive, hands-on inventory accounting and cost-accounting experience.
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP, financial reporting, and technical accounting.
  • Direct experience with month-end close, journal entries, reconciliations, and internal controls.
  • Proven ability to lead and develop an accounting team while remaining personally involved in detailed accounting work.
  • Ability to independently assess accounting issues, challenge existing processes, and make sound accounting decisions.
  • Willingness to operate as a hands-on individual contributor, not solely in a strategic or supervisory capacity.
  • Ability to work onsite in Stamford, CT, three days per week.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Big Four public accounting experience.
  • Background in retail, apparel, CPG, or consumer products.
  • Experience with omnichannel inventory operations and NetSuite or a comparable ERP.
  • Equity-accounting experience.

Engagement Details

  • Target Start: November 16, 2026, or sooner if available.
  • Initial Duration: Through February 26, 2027, with potential extension.
  • Compensation: $100-$110/hour W-2 through Korn Ferry; C2C may also be considered.

If you're an experienced Controller who enjoys combining technical accounting expertise with hands-on execution and team leadership, please reach out directly or apply today.
