Our client, a leading organization in the multifamily real estate sector, is seeking an experienced INTERIM Assistant General Counsel (AGC) to support a growing portfolio of multifamily assets. This role will serve as a key legal partner across multiple business lines, providing hands on support in contract negotiation, regulatory research, and complex transactional matters. The position offers the opportunity to operate autonomously while collaborating closely with internal stakeholders, business leaders, and outside counsel.

This is an excellent opportunity for an attorney with strong real estate expertise-particularly NYC multifamily-who thrives in a fast paced, multifaceted environment. This role is HYBRID TO NYC 3 DAYS A WEEK.


Key Responsibilities

Contract Drafting, Review & Negotiation

  • Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of multifamily real estate contracts, including property management agreements, vendor/service agreements, construction/repair contracts, and investment?related documentation.
  • Ensure contracts reflect business objectives while mitigating legal and regulatory risks.
  • Provide guidance to business partners on contract structure, negotiation strategy, and risk exposure.

Legal & Regulatory Research

  • Research pending laws, regulatory changes, and local/state requirements impacting multifamily operations, compliance obligations, tenant relations, and property management.
  • Advise business leaders on regulatory impacts and support proactive compliance planning.
  • Prepare written summaries, recommendations, and memos for internal stakeholders.

Transactional Support & Cross Functional Partnership

  • Analyze and support complex real estate transactions involving acquisitions, dispositions, joint ventures, financing, and operational restructuring.
  • Collaborate with internal departments (operations, asset management, finance, compliance) to ensure legal alignment throughout the transaction lifecycle.
  • Translate legal considerations into practical, business?aligned solutions.

Management of Outside Counsel

  • Engage, coordinate, and manage outside counsel for specialized matters such as litigation, zoning/land use, regulatory issues, or highly technical real estate transactions.
  • Review and manage budgets, legal strategy, and work product deliverables.
  • Ensure outside counsel recommendations align with organizational risk tolerance and timelines.

General Legal Advisory Duties

  • Provide day-to-day legal support on multifamily operations, tenant issues, vendor disputes, and contract interpretation.
  • Support internal teams with policy development, compliance guidance, and risk mitigation strategies.
  • Maintain strong, consistent communication with leadership, ensuring timely updates on legal matters and emerging issues.

Required Qualifications

  • Active Bar license in the State of New York (in good standing).
  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
  • 5+ years of experience practicing law, preferably with strong exposure to real estate, transactional work, or multifamily legal matters.
  • Proven ability to independently manage a high-volume workload with minimal oversight.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; strong analytical and organizational abilities.

Preferred Experience

  • Hands-on experience with NYC multifamily real estate-including rent regulations, operational agreements, or multifamily tenant/owner matters.
  • Background in insurance defense, real estate litigation, or similar practice areas is a strong plus.
  • Experience navigating personal injury, construction defect, landlord?tenant, or real estate?adjacent disputes.
  • Prior experience advising cross?functional teams or supporting multifamily asset operations.
