We have partnered with our client, a boutique law firm, in their search for a Controller. This role is responsible for directing and optimizing all financial and certain administrative operations of the firm. You will partner closely with leadership to drive sound financial management, ensure compliance, and support strategic growth, while also providing hands-on oversight of daily accounting functions.
Responsibilities
Financial Strategy & Planning
Partner with firm leadership to create annual budgets, develop financial forecasts, and establish case-specific budgets in collaboration with case teams.
Monitor and manage cash flow, collections, and overall financial performance to meet organizational goals.
Accounting Operations
Oversee the full spectrum of daily accounting activities, including general ledger maintenance, trust (IOLTA) and operating accounts, payroll, billing, and reconciliations.
Ensure accuracy and timeliness in financial reporting, providing leadership with clear, actionable insights.
Implement and refine financial systems, processes, and controls to enhance efficiency and scalability.
Compliance & Governance
Maintain strict compliance with ethical obligations for multi-state client trust accounts and firm retainer agreements.
Ensure adherence to state registration requirements and all applicable tax regulations.
Coordinate with external accountants, auditors, lenders, and banking partners to meet all reporting and audit obligations.
Human Resources Support
Partner with HR to manage employee lifecycle processes including onboarding, offboarding, benefits administration, and compliance tracking.
Collaboration & Communication
Work closely with attorneys and staff to deliver accurate, timely financial information that supports effective decision-making and cost-efficient operations.
Skills Required
3–5+ years of law firm financial management or accounting experience
Experience with benefits administration, payroll, 401(k), and budgeting
Knowledge of trust accounting and legal billing practices highly preferred
Proficiency with QuickBooks, Clio, or similar platforms preferred
Education & Work Experience
Fractional Controller (25-30 hours/week)
