We have partnered with our client in their search for an Interim Executive Director of a groundbreaking science museum initiative that sits at the intersection of science, art, creativity, and human experience.
This is a unique opportunity for a visionary and entrepreneurial leader to guide the development, launch, and growth of an innovative museum dedicated to immersive, participatory learning. The Interim Executive Director will serve as the chief executive and public face of the organization, leading strategic planning, fundraising, stakeholder engagement, operational development, and the creation of transformative visitor experiences.

This individual will work closely with the Board, community partners, educators, scientists, artists, donors, and civic leaders to create a nationally recognized destination for exploration, discovery, and learning.
What You'll Do
Shape the Vision
- Lead the execution of the museum's mission, strategic priorities, and long-term vision.
- Inspire a diverse network of stakeholders around a shared commitment to experiential learning and public engagement.
- Establish and elevate the museum's identity, positioning it as a leader in interdisciplinary science and arts experiences.
- Partner closely with the Board to guide organizational growth and strategic decision-making.
Lead Museum Development and Launch
- Oversee all phases of museum creation, from planning and design through launch and public opening.
- Collaborate with architects, exhibit designers, and project teams to ensure alignment with the museum's educational and experiential goals.
- Build the organizational foundation, including governance practices, operational systems, policies, and staffing structures.
- Drive cross-functional collaboration to ensure successful project execution and readiness for opening.
Drive Fundraising and Organizational Growth
- Lead fundraising efforts, including capital campaign activities and major donor engagement.
- Cultivate relationships with foundations, corporations, government agencies, and philanthropic partners.
- Partner with the Board and development stakeholders to secure resources needed for sustainable growth.
- Serve as a compelling ambassador for the mission and impact of the organization.
Build Meaningful Partnerships
- Develop strategic relationships with universities, research institutions, schools, cultural organizations, artists, and community partners.
- Ensure the museum reflects and serves the interests of diverse audiences and communities.
- Foster collaborations that advance STEAM education, creativity, and lifelong learning.
Build and Lead a High-Performing Team
- Recruit, mentor, and develop a founding leadership team across exhibitions, education, operations, development, marketing, and visitor experience.
- Create a collaborative, inclusive, and mission-driven culture.
- Promote accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement across the organization.
Oversee Operations and Financial Stewardship
- Lead budgeting, financial planning, forecasting, and reporting activities.
- Develop sustainable revenue strategies, including admissions, memberships, sponsorships, programs, and events.
- Ensure the organization operates in compliance with all applicable legal, safety, governance, and ethical requirements.
Champion Exceptional Visitor Experiences
- Support the creation of innovative exhibitions and programs that blend science, art, perception, and human curiosity.
- Foster a culture of experimentation, creativity, and evaluation.
- Ensure exhibits and programs are accessible, inclusive, engaging, and impactful for audiences of all backgrounds and ages.
Serve as the Public Face of the Organization
- Act as the museum's primary spokesperson with media, donors, community leaders, policymakers, and industry organizations.
- Represent the institution at public events, conferences, and strategic forums.
- Elevate the museum's profile locally, nationally, and internationally.
What We're Looking For
Required Qualifications
- 10+ years of senior leadership experience within museums, science centers, educational organizations, cultural institutions, nonprofits, hospitality organizations, or similarly mission-driven environments.
- Demonstrated success leading organizational growth, strategic planning, fundraising, and team development initiatives.
- Proven ability to build partnerships and engage diverse stakeholder groups.
- Strong business and financial acumen, including budget management and resource allocation.
- Exceptional communication, relationship-building, and executive leadership skills.
- Experience leading complex initiatives in dynamic or evolving environments.
