About the Company

Our client is a retirement services organization that supports employers, plan sponsors, and retirement industry stakeholders through specialized retirement plan expertise and service delivery. The company is preparing to evaluate a potential third-party technology partnership and is seeking a highly experienced retirement recordkeeping technology leader to provide independent, objective guidance throughout the evaluation process.

Position Overview

The Enterprise Recordkeeping Technology Consultant will serve as a senior independent advisor focused on evaluating an emerging technology solution within the retirement recordkeeping ecosystem. This person will bring deep, practical experience with 401(k) recordkeeping technology, legacy platforms, integrations, retirement operations, and enterprise technology modernization.

This is not a traditional implementation or delivery role. The consultant will act as a trusted advisor and design partner, helping the company pressure-test the third-party firm's technology, business model, product roadmap, implementation approach, and overall viability within real-world recordkeeping environments. The ideal consultant will have operated at a Director level or above within a major retirement recordkeeping organization and will understand both the technical architecture and operational constraints that shape enterprise recordkeeping platforms.

Key Responsibilities

Serve as an independent advisor in the evaluation of an emerging technology solution within the retirement recordkeeping ecosystem.

Assess the third-party technology firm's proposed solution, business model, implementation approach, and roadmap through the lens of real-world recordkeeping environments.

Pressure-test technical assumptions, integration strategies, product claims, and operational workflows to identify potential risks, gaps, or adoption barriers.

Evaluate how the proposed technology may interact with core recordkeeping platforms, legacy systems, data flows, integrations, downstream processes, participant/plan sponsor workflows, and operational teams.

Identify potential implementation challenges, scalability concerns, data and integration issues, operational impacts, and change-management considerations.

Provide candid, constructive feedback as a design partner to help shape the product roadmap, pilot strategy, and go-to-market assumptions.

Leverage deep industry knowledge and, where appropriate, professional relationships across the retirement services ecosystem to validate assumptions and provide market intelligence.

Advise senior leadership on the practicality, risks, opportunities, and strategic fit of the proposed technology partnership.

Required Qualifications

15+ years of experience within a major retirement recordkeeping organization, ideally with significant exposure to 401(k) recordkeeping technology and operations.

Director-level or above experience with hands-on knowledge of core recordkeeping platforms, legacy recordkeeping environments, integrations, and retirement technology architecture.

Strong practical understanding of the operational realities, constraints, and complexity of legacy recordkeeping environments.

Experience evaluating, implementing, modernizing, or advising on recordkeeping technologies, digital transformation initiatives, enterprise technology modernization, or retirement platform strategy.

Ability to evaluate technology from both a strategic and practical implementation perspective, including architecture, integrations, operations, risk, scalability, adoption, and business viability.

Strong communication skills with the ability to provide clear, direct, and objective feedback to senior leadership and external technology partners.

Experience serving as a strategic advisor, consultant, internal SME, transformation leader, or technology executive within the retirement services industry.

Preferred Qualifications

Established professional network within the retirement services and recordkeeping industry, including organizations such as Fidelity, Empower, Schwab, Principal, Ascensus, Voya, John Hancock, or similar firms.

Experience evaluating startup, emerging technology, fintech, retirement technology, or recordkeeping-adjacent platforms.

Prior experience advising on product strategy, pilot programs, vendor evaluations, technology partnerships, or enterprise platform modernization.

Strong understanding of retirement plan operations, plan sponsor needs, participant experience, data exchange, compliance-adjacent workflows, and enterprise service delivery.

Reporting Structure

This consultant will report directly to the company's CEO & Founder. There are no direct reports associated with this engagement.

Work Arrangement

This is a primarily remote fractional consulting engagement requiring approximately 10-15 hours per week. Hours may fluctuate depending on third-party partner meetings, evaluation milestones, and advisory needs. The consultant should be available for key meetings and is expected to attend approximately one onsite meeting per month in Plano, Texas.

Interview Process

The interview process is expected to include one to two interviews with senior leadership.
