We have partnered with our client in their search for a experienced Leave of Absence & Disability Specialists to join its team on a contract basis. Due to increased claim volume, employee leave activity, and expanding programs, this role will provide critical support in managing disability and leave cases from assignment through resolution.
The Leave of Absence & Disability Specialist serves as the primary point of contact for employees throughout the claims lifecycle, ensuring timely, accurate, and compliant administration of disability and leave benefits while delivering an exceptional customer experience.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage a full caseload of Short-Term Disability (STD), Long-Term Disability (LTD), Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), and leave of absence claims from intake through closure.
- Serve as the primary owner of assigned claims, providing proactive communication and guidance to claimants throughout the claims process.
- Review medical documentation and supporting information to determine claim eligibility and benefit decisions.
- Coordinate return-to-work planning and ensure appropriate documentation is received and maintained.
- Interpret and administer federal, state, and employer leave policies, including statutory leave programs when applicable.
- Maintain accurate and detailed claim documentation within the claims management system.
- Communicate with claimants, employers, healthcare providers, and internal stakeholders via phone, email, and other communication channels.
- Partner closely with clinical advocates, nurses, and medical professionals to manage medically complex claims.
- Ensure all claims are administered in accordance with company policies, client requirements, and applicable regulations.
- Meet productivity, quality, and service level expectations while effectively managing a high-volume caseload.
- Escalate complex issues appropriately and collaborate with leadership to resolve challenging situations.
Qualifications
- 4+ years of experience administering disability and leave claims.
- Strong knowledge of:
- Short-Term Disability (STD)
- Long-Term Disability (LTD)
- Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA)
- ADA accommodations (preferred)
- State and statutory leave programs
- Experience making independent claim determinations and eligibility decisions.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
- Excellent customer service, communication, and organizational skills.
- Strong attention to detail and documentation practices.
- Experience working within a Third-Party Administrator (TPA), insurance carrier, or leave administration environment is highly preferred.
