Title: Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO)

Location: Greensboro, NC (Hybrid)

Compensation: $120/hr. - $170/hr.  (Contract-to-hire)

We have partnered with our client in their search for a Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO). The Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO) will serve as the primary liaison between medical staff and the information systems team. Reporting to the Chief Information Officer (CIO), the CMIO will lead the ongoing integration of health information technology (HIT) into both hospital and ambulatory settings, with a focus on promoting the highest standards of quality, safety, and evidence-based patient care. The CMIO will be responsible for driving physician engagement, system adoption, standardization, and the optimization of clinical systems across the continuum of patient care. This role will lead health IT initiatives that enhance patient care, improve clinical outcomes, and advance organizational goals.

Responsibilities

  • Lead efforts to advance the use of clinical information systems, ensuring alignment with quality and safety goals.
  • Drive physician engagement and adoption of clinical systems, optimizing their usability across care settings.
  • Ensure the standardization and optimization of clinical information systems, minimizing variations in care delivery.
  • Provide strategic leadership in the implementation of health information technology solutions, including Electronic Health Records (EHR), Clinical Decision Support (CDS), and Health Information Exchanges (HIE).
  • Collaborate closely with clinical leaders, IT staff, and other stakeholders to ensure that technology initiatives meet the needs of clinicians while remaining aligned with organizational priorities.
  • Assess the impact of new health IT initiatives on clinical workflows and patient care outcomes, offering recommendations for improvements.
  • Promote and support the use of technology solutions that reduce clinician burnout and enhance satisfaction, focusing on Electronic Health Record (EHR) usability.
  • Participate in steering committees focused on patient safety, quality improvement, and clinical operational effectiveness.
  • Lead efforts to meet key regulatory requirements, such as Meaningful Use, ACO, and other system-wide compliance initiatives.
  • Serve as a strategic partner to senior leadership in leveraging digital health innovations, value-based care models, and population health management initiatives.

Skills Required

  • Expertise in health information technology, including electronic health record systems (EHR), clinical decision support systems (CDS), and health information exchanges (HIE).
  • Demonstrated leadership in clinical informatics and healthcare technology, with a strong track record of driving physician engagement and system adoption.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with clinical and IT leaders.
  • Proven ability to manage complex health information projects, including system implementation and optimization efforts.
  • Experience in regulatory compliance and health IT standards, ensuring alignment with industry requirements such as Meaningful Use and other initiatives.

Education & Work Experience

  • Required: MD or Master’s degree in Medical Informatics, Information Systems, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Required: Minimum of 5 years of experience in medical informatics and leadership of clinical information teams.
  • Preferred: Board certification in Clinical Informatics (American Board of Preventive Medicine or American Board of Pathology).
  • Preferred: Experience with the implementation and optimization of Epic or other EHR systems.

Additional Licensure/Certification Requirements

  • Preferred: Board certification from a recognized specialty board (American Board of Medical Specialties or the American Osteopathic Association).

Essential Job Functions

  • Information Technology

    • Promote high-quality, cost-effective medical care through the efficient use of clinical information technology.
    • Collaborate with clinical and IT leaders to implement and optimize health information systems, ensuring alignment with clinical needs.
    • Serve as an advocate for the use of health information technology to integrate care across different venues, leveraging EHR systems, clinical data, and emerging technologies.
  • Clinical Systems and Workflows

    • Lead efforts to reduce clinician burnout by optimizing EHR usability and enhancing workflow efficiency.
    • Support organization-wide initiatives such as Meaningful Use, ACO, and population health management.
    • Build strong relationships with physicians, advanced practice providers, nursing staff, and other healthcare professionals to ensure clinical workflows are aligned with system capabilities.
    • Stay informed on trends in medical informatics, and assist in developing strategies to support ongoing IT improvements.
  • Strategic Leadership

    • Partner with IT teams to translate clinical needs into technical requirements for system enhancements.
    • Serve as a strategic liaison between clinical leaders and IT teams, fostering alignment on health IT goals.
    • Provide strategic leadership for initiatives in digital health, value-based care, and clinical transformation.
  • Management Functions

    • Participate in committees focused on quality improvement, patient safety, and operational efficiency.
    • Engage in community-based healthcare initiatives and represent clinical informatics in external partnerships.
    • Ensure high levels of user support, including training and ongoing system optimization to drive widespread clinical adoption of information systems.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Strong written and verbal communication skills that promote effective collaboration across medical and IT teams.
    • Ability to analyze the impact of technology on patient care and set standards for system use, including medical terminology and EHR functionality.
    • Expertise in healthcare IT regulatory needs and compliance, including patient safety and data security.
    • Capable of maintaining calm and problem-solving under pressure, particularly in high-stakes clinical environments.
    • Skilled in training clinicians on IT systems and providing ongoing support to ensure effective use.
    • Project management experience, including budget oversight, scheduling, and resource allocation.
    • Strong analytical skills with the ability to handle multiple priorities and meet strict deadlines in a demanding environment.
    • Knowledge of clinical data analytics, quality improvement, and healthcare performance metrics.
